Alex Gough tells a heck of a tale! Read Watchman of Rome and enjoyed it thoroughly for its fresh perspective in characters (retired Centurion starting a new life, the others in the neighborhood he finds himself in) so when I saw there was another is the series snapped it right up and dove in. Was not disappointed! In this novel the stage has changed and new characters enter and Gough explores areas of Roman society that others merely brush over (the mines specifically). While it was in some ways a bit predictable, the predictability was in for a twist or two and never detracted from the tale being told. A truly gifted author who I hope we see much more from in the years to come! The one technical gripe was that on my Kindle the scene transitions were not spaced with a multiple line break which caught me off guard at times making me reread the preceding lines to orient myself.Product details

Bandits of Rome Carbo of Rome Book 2 (Audible Audio Edition) Alex Gough Alex HydeWhite Punch Audio Books Reviews
There are a few gems out there in the world of independent fiction and despite the increasing (now vast) swathe of Roman fiction hitting virtual shelves, still certain writers and works stand out. Alex Gough came to my attention last year with his debut work Watchmen of Rome, which immediately hit me as a cut above the general quality of releases and was, in fact, a thoroughly absorbing and well-written book.
Given that, when I found out that he’d written a sequel, I virtually drooled with anticipation.
Bandits of Rome maintains the high standards set by the first book and continues to build characters and relationships while forming a completely separate plot, totally independent of the previous volume.
Following the troubles in Rome with the rogue priestess and the conflagrations in Watchmen of Rome, Carbo sets off with his vigiles friend, his woman and a small entourage to lay eyes for the first time on the plot of land that had been granted him on his retirement from the army. But on the journey, a chance encounter with an intriguing and deadly pair of killers leads him into a feud that threatens everything he cares about.
The characters from book one continue to deepen (with one notable exception – you’ll understand that when you read it) and the new characters are well-rounded and credible. In fact, Carbo himself becomes a much more 3dimensional character in this second volume as we are treated to a whole different side of him that makes him more human and sympathetic. The bad guys are at once creepy, vicious, dislikable and yet somehow fascinating. The settings, in small town and countryside estate, are a nice juxtaposition to the tight urbanism of book 1 and are described well enough that they capture the imagination and can easily be seen in the mind’s eye.
The plot was fresh, plausible and exciting, and possibly surpassed that of book 1. The pace never really let up, which made the book an enthralling read, pulling you along in the plot with never a pause. And there are moments in this novel, following a certain point in the story, which I consider to be extremely powerful writing, hitting the reader between the eyes and wrenching at their gut.
In short, Bandits of Rome is a very worthy sequel to an excellent book. I heartily recommend both of these. Carbo is fast becoming one of the seminal heroes of Roman fiction.
Bandits of Rome is a sequel to Alex Gough’s novel Watchmen of Rome. Both novels deal with the seamy side of Rome during the reign of the Emperor Tiberius. Gough’s flawed hero is a man named Carbo, a veteran of twenty years in the legions and one of the few survivors of the devastating battle of the Teutoberg Forest.
After their harrowing experiences in Rome, Carbo decides to take his intended bride Rufa, her daughter Fabilla, his best friend Vespillo and his wife Severa and his German born slave Marsia to his farm on the outskirts of the ancient Greek-founded city of Nola. There he hopes to make his farm prosper and live a life of peace, contentment and tranquility. Alas, it is not to be.
Nola is in the grip of bandits who have established a reign of terror. In particular there is a pair of ruthless thugs who dress in the masques of the old Greek theater-Tragedy and Comedy. They rob and kill the unwary and sell their captives into slavery. The bandits have taken on the personae of the cursed Greek house of Atreus. Tragedy is Atreus and Comedy is his brother Thyestes. Carbo and his party have an unfortunate encounter with the pair as they approach Carbo’s farm and Carbo kills Comedy, thus incurring the undying wrath of Tragedy. They report the matter to the tribune who heads the Stationeri in Nola and find that the authorities are unwilling to get involved in any efforts to curb the lawlessness. Corruption runs deep.
There are fates worse than death, as Carbo will discover when he is sent to work in the lead mines of Sicily. Fortunately for Carbo, his friends have not forgotten him.
Bandits of Rome is an awesome combination of historical fiction, murder mystery and exciting adventure. Alex Gough is a masterful storyteller.
This is more of an adventure story and less about historical fiction although there is an informative section about the life of a slave in a Roman mine. The fact that the hero escapes from his various predicaments owes a lot to almost impossible coincidence but nevertheless the book is a real page turner.
I was fully engrossed while reading Bandits Of Rome. I pretty much put almost everything off until I finished. I was lucky enough to receive a free copy of Bandits Of Rome by Alex Gough in exchange for a review. That doesn't alter my opinion on the fact that Bandits Of Rome is an incredibly cool story with an ambush, a trip to the mines, decimation by rocks, and a finale that I read twice because it was so exciting. Alex Gough has found a really cool nitche with Carbo and I'm on board for more adventures.
